Media mogul seeking a divorce with little contention

Rupert Murdoch has made billions in the cutthroat media business. But, his aggressiveness as a businessman does not necessarily translate into an affinity for conflict in all areas of his life.

After 14 years of marriage, Murdoch filed for divorce from his wife on June 13. All relevent factors seem to indicate that he is looking to end things quickly, quietly and as amicably as possible.

The filing was short and succinct, indicating that the marriage is irretrievably broken, but not detailing any alleged wrongdoing. Furthermore, before and during the marriage, Murdoch and his wife executed a number of pre- and postnuptial agreements that likely addressed most of the major financial points of contention that are likely to come up in the case.

Mr. Murdoch's choice of lawyer was also revealing of his intentions to keep things low-key. His attorney has a reputation for discretion and the quiet settling of cases, and also has a positive relationship with the lawyer representing Murdoch's wife.

Finally, if history is any indication, the divorce will likely proceed smoothly and without drama. The lawyer who worked for Murdoch's second with during the media icon's last divorce said that everything in that proceeding was wrapped up expedient and with a minimal amount of fuss.

While you may not be a billionaire, Rupert Murdoch's approach toward divorce shows that even in marriages in which there is a great deal of property to be divided, things can proceed in an amicable and orderly fashion. His lesson to any divorcing individual is to go into the divorce with two essential things: the right attitude and the right lawyer.
