Resources needed when child custody issues are contested

Every aspect of divorce for Illinois couples seems to be getting more complicated.  This especially pertains to child custody matters.  Now we are even seeing articles written about the need for obtaining experts in helping courts come to decisions concerning child custody matters.

In some instances the expert is court appointed.  In other instances the expert may be hired by one or the other spouse.  In still other circumstances this could involve both parents going in together in the retaining of an expert.

Pertaining to certain child custody matters, type of experts retained could include:

  • Psychological experts: such experts may testify concerning the emotional well-being of a child during the divorce process.
  • Vocational expert: an expert who can make determinations concerning the ability of one parent or both parents to provide for a child into the future.
  • Income expert: an expert hired on to provide an opinion as to the appropriate amount a parent should be ordered to pay in child support.

There are other kinds of experts that may be retained during the divorce process as well - ones that may or may not cost a sum of money.  Ultimately family law attorneys will likely provide the best advice as to what resources are or are not needed regarding such a matter.  On certain occasions attorneys can foster communication between the clients and help both spouses come to an agreement on what would be in the best interest of a child - the goal of every child custody determination.  Under other circumstances, the court may need to be persuaded by evidence and expert testimony.
