Struggles to get Illinois parents to pay their child support

A father living 3,500 miles away from his two daughters and former spouse is $70,000 behind in child support. Money does not appear to be a problem. Instead, he simply refuses to cooperate with the Illinois court system in paying his back child support in part because he claims he is being treated unfairly.

An attorney calls Illinois "one of the worst states in the nation for collecting child support." This may not be entirely accurate, but cases of back child support of more than $50,000 being unpaid do occur. It appears that enforcement is particularly difficult in those cases where individuals keep changing jobs or are self-employed and have the ability to hide their income.

At any given moment, there can be as many as 20,000 active cases just in Lake County.  Even federal money granted in order to recover these child support payments has not alleviated the problem.

Parents taking care of their children are often at a loss as to what to do.  In some instances they do not feel that they can afford to pay a family law attorney to help them out.  However, they should at least consult with an attorney to discover what their legal options happen to be.

There are family law attorneys that may be able to provide parents seeking child support for their children more affordable alternatives.  Experienced attorneys will have the means to garnish wages or place liens on property.  They may also be able to offer other solutions as well.

Child support was put in place so that the best interests of the child can be met.  Not all parents understand this.  Instead they choose to ignore their obligations towards their children.
