$1.4 billion in Illinois child support collected last year

According to the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, the agency has collected record levels of child support during its fiscal year, from June 2013 through June 2014. The IDHFS claims that most of this income was collected through wage garnishing and income withholding programs. This marks 10 years in a row in which the agency collected over $1 billion in child support.

The freezing and seizing of bank accounts is another way that the IDHFS collects child support that is due. Another strategy involves notifying government licensing agencies and ordering them to revoke or suspend the professional licenses of parents who are overdue on their child support obligations. The Department of Natural Resources also denies fishing and hunting license to parents who have been deemed non-compliant by the courts.

The IDHFS offers a website that parents can use in order to enforce a child support decree. Once a parent is signed up for enforcement services, then government agencies will do all that they can to ensure that a child support ruling or agreement is adhered to.

Illinois parents who are waiting to receive child support, and parents who -- for whatever reason are unable to meet their child support obligations -- can pursue legal strategies to resolve the problem. These matters, though, are best resolved as early as possible. Indeed, the longer that child support goes unpaid, the more difficult it will be for the paying parent to resolve the debt, and the more difficult it will be for the paid parent to obtain the child support that he or she is owed.
