Child custody and child support concerns during the holidays

During the holidays, most Illinois parents will want to spend as much time with their children as they can. However, single parents who share child custody could be met with some challenges in this regard. Sometimes, parents agree to spend every other Christmas or every other Thanksgiving with their children. In other cases, they may agree to spend half of the holiday with their children.

Regardless what your holiday child custody arrangements happen to be, though, there are a few things single parents may want to consider doing in order to get their the holidays as a single parent, which can be draining and sometimes difficult to deal with. For one, remember to pin down all shared parenting time arrangements well in advance of the holiday's arrival. This will help ensure that everything goes smoothly both for you and your children.

Next, parents may want to start thinking of new holiday traditions. There may have been some holiday traditions that you, your child and ex-spouse enjoyed prior to divorce, but now it is time to consider new ones that will be special to just you and your children. Does it involve a trip to a local lake on the weekend after Christmas? Does it involve watching local fireworks on New Year's Day? Whatever your tradition is, it will be memorable, because it was spent with the people you love most.

Parents who are paying child custody bills and are newly divorced may not have as much cash on hand to spend money on Christmas presents. Remember to watch holiday spending because it is much smarter to save money on gifts rather than get behind on child support payments.

During this holiday season, remember that our children are the most valuable possessions we have, and the season is about showing them we care. Time well spent is the best way to enjoy the holiday season, and with a little bit of planning and forethought, divorced couples can perhaps achieve their happiest holidays yet.
