Do you need a child support modification?

During divorce proceedings, Illinois parents will either come to an agreement about child support payments or they will receive a decision from a family law judge. In making such a determination, courts will evaluate both parent's incomes, the amount of time the children will spend with each parent and other factors to decide how much is owed in child support. The paying parent will then be required to meet the support obligation every month or face serious legal consequences.

Just like anything in life, though, economic conditions are never guaranteed. If the paying parent's economic circumstances suddenly change for the worse, then he or she may no longer be able to afford paying the other parent the amount of support he or she owes. In such situations, the paying parent can petition the court for a child support modification to lower his or her monthly support obligations.

In pursuing a support modification, Illinois parents can seek the assistance of an experienced family law attorney. At the Goddard & Malmquist Attorneys & Counselors at Law, we have extensive experience working for parents needing a child support modification due to a change in economic circumstances. Our legal team will review your financial records, depose witnesses and consult with financial experts to present your case as strategically as possible.

An Illinois parent who is unable to meet his or her child support obligations due to financial difficulty could face harsh penalties relating to support back payments owed. For this reason, whenever a support modification is required, it is best to take care of the matter as soon as possible.
