Going through a divorce is hard enough, but when you add a substantial amount of wealth or fame to the equation, it ups the unpleasantness quotient tenfold. That's why many high-profile couples opt for a prenuptial agreement before the marriage and hire a team of attorneys and experts after things have gone south. We like to say that the wealthy and famous are just normal people, and this is true in most cases, but when it comes to high asset divorces, their situations are anything but normal.
Recently, Hollywood mega-couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, often referred to as "Bennifer," have announced to the media that they will be getting a divorce. The announcement came after years of speculation by rag magazines and gossip sites about the couple's status. They made one comment in which they asked for privacy and had plans to co-parent and share custody of their three children, a 9-year-old, a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old.
Unlike most famous, wealthy couples, Affleck and Garner chose not to draft a prenuptial agreement when they tied the knot. Depending on the amicability of their split, this could mean two things: a long, drawn-out battle over property division or a dose of collaborative law that will help them divide assets fairly.
Couples with significant wealth or fame who are getting married would be wise to get a prenup before the fact. Even if they haven't taken this important step, an attorney who specializes in high asset divorce may be able to help them with issues of complex asset division, alimony, child support and child custody, all the while protecting their rights and keeping the details from the public eye.
