What can child support be used for?

If you have gone through a divorce, you are likely finding that it takes time for your finances to get back on track. You must adjust to one income and full responsibility for bills, and if you are not the primary custodian of your children, you may have the added expense of child support.

This can be daunting. Especially when you want to spend money on your kids, perhaps spoil them a little more than ever when you have time with them. It can be painful to have limited custody, and so when you don't have the money to make the most of that time, it is more than frustrating. Especially when you are sending the majority of your paycheck to your spouse for child support and your spouse appears to be living without hardships, and with an upgraded lifestyle, while the kids do not.

In truth, child support payments are intended to cover far more than the basic needs of your children. They are intended to cover food, clothing, education, entertainment, extracurriculars and transportation costs. So if a child is not malnourished and truant at school or missing a coat in the winter, there isn't a likely remedy for your frustration.

However, if your child's needs are not being met, and it is apparent they are going without while your spouse is more than provided for, you may want to go back to court. An Illinois family law attorney may be able to investigate your claims and approach the court about child support or child custody modifications. The court always strives to keep the best interests of the children at the forefront, and will likely take your claims very seriously with evidence to back them.
