Divorce advice: what to do and what to avoid

The inherently tumultuous process of going through a divorce means that people are going to emotional and upset during the split, even if they say they are prepared for it. Divorce is simply a tough event in any person's life, and there could be moments within the divorce that test their patience and resolve. So today, we want to talk about some things that you should do while going through a divorce, and some thing that you should avoid.

What you should do is:

  • Be calm, cooperative and reasonable with your requests and conversations with your soon-to-be-former spouse and his or her attorney.
  • Be honest and forthcoming with information about your assets and finances.
  • Discuss your case and its many complexities with an experienced family law attorney.
  • Be there for your children and always consider their needs first.

Given these steps that you should take, what should you avoid? Consider these factors:

  • Moving to a different state or getting a new job during a divorce can add complications to the divorce. So if you can control it, you should avoid taking these steps.
  • Getting angry, violating agreements or using social media to berate or launch verbal attacks against your spouse are poor strategies. They can have dramatic effects on your divorce.
  • Avoid "nefarious" acts, such a gifting assets to other people with the condition they will give it back to you later once the divorce is complete, simply to circumvent the divorce process.
