How digital assets play a role in divorce

We live in a world now that has an amazing amount of electronic data. Everywhere you go, your online information, profiles and activity have a major impact on your life, even if you aren't acutely aware of it in the moment. These digital assets are exactly that when it comes to a divorce -- assets. And when a couple decides that it is time to dissolve their marriage, then they need to consider the ramifications of that divorce on their digital assets.

Shared social media accounts, online financial accounts, email accounts and many other digital assets could be critical pieces in property division discussions. Even if they aren't in these exact discussions, you should still move quickly to change your online passwords and personal accounts after a divorce.

Another element to this topic is the actual use of online assets during, or in the wake of, a divorce. Specifically in regards to social media, spouses that are going through a divorce should avoid using these platforms altogether. But if you must use them, refrain from using them in ways to hurt, attack or embarrass your soon-to-be-ex. The words you put out on social media platforms are not as private as they seem, and those entries can be used as evidence against you in divorce proceedings.

It is important to consider in this technological world of ours that digital assets and accounts are a part of our lives, even during legal proceedings such as divorce.
